Plaque Psoriasis Treatment
Plaque psoriasis may be a mild irritation to some people but it’s a chronic condition that can have a greater impact on your quality of life. Murrays Chemist in Harrow can help you manage this long-term condition through a range of treatments and support.
What is plaque psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a long-term skin condition that has many forms, the most common of which is plaque psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis, or Psoriasis Vulgaris, causes red, flaky patches of skin that can be crusty and covered in silvery-white scales. The condition is caused by an overproduction of skin cells in the affected areas.
Typically, plaque psoriasis affects the skin on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back but can occur anywhere on the body. About 2% of people suffer from psoriasis and it equally affects men and women.
What treatments can I get for plaque psoriasis?
The treatments for psoriasis vulgaris vary depending on the severity. Treatments start with topical creams and ointments to apply directly to the skin. The types of ointments include moisturisers and emollients or creams containing steroids or vitamin D.
An old remedy for psoriasis is coal tar and is still popular today. Coal tar encourages the top layer of skin to shed. Coal tar is available in shampoos as well as skin preparations.
You may need to try some creams for several weeks before noticing any improvement. You may also need to try several different treatments before finding which one/combination works best for you.
If your condition does not respond to topical treatments, there are other options, including phototherapy and injections, that you can try.
Working with your healthcare providers, such as your GP or pharmacist, you can create a care plan that helps you manage your psoriasis and avoid the things that make it worse.
