NHS Blood Pressure Checks in Harrow
NHS Hypertension Case-Finding Service at Murrays Chemist
High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) affects millions of people in the UK—often without symptoms. If left untreated, it can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and vascular dementia. That’s why we offer free NHS blood pressure checks as part of the national Hypertension Case-Finding Service.
Who Can Access This Service?
You are eligible for a free NHS blood pressure check at Murrays Chemist if you are:
-
Aged 40 or over and not currently diagnosed with hypertension
-
Aged under 40 but considered at risk (e.g. family history or GP referral)
-
Aged 35–39 and flagged during another clinical review (subject to professional judgement)
For more on who should have their blood pressure checked, visit the NHS blood pressure page.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
-
Initial BP Check
Our trained team will measure your blood pressure using calibrated equipment in a private setting. -
Review of Results
-
Normal: No action needed. We’ll advise when to check again.
-
Raised (140/90 mmHg or above): We may offer Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) for a more accurate diagnosis.
-
Very High (≥180/120 mmHg): We will escalate to a GP or urgent care provider immediately.
-
-
ABPM (Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring)
If your reading is borderline or elevated, you may be fitted with a 24-hour BP monitor that records readings throughout the day and night. This method is more reliable and helps confirm whether high blood pressure is sustained. -
Referral & Follow-Up
If hypertension is confirmed, we’ll send a summary to your GP for further diagnosis, treatment, or medication review.
How Often Should You Check Your Blood Pressure?
-
At least once every 5 years if over 40 and previous readings were normal
-
Every 12 months if you’re borderline or at increased risk
-
More frequently if advised by a healthcare professional
