NHS Contraception Service

Free NHS Contraception Service – Murrays Chemist, Harrow

Start or Continue the Contraceptive Pill Without Waiting for a GP Appointment

Getting access to contraception shouldn’t be stressful. But for many people, booking a GP appointment for a simple contraceptive review or a first prescription can be frustrating—with limited availability, long waiting times, or delays just to renew a pill you’ve been taking for years.

At Murrays Chemist in Harrow, we provide a free NHS contraception service, offering both initiation and ongoing supply of oral contraceptive pills—without needing to see your GP.

This service is designed to improve access, reduce pressure on GPs, and support your reproductive health quickly, safely, and professionally.

What the Service Covers

1. Initiating Contraception – First Time Users

If you’re considering starting the pill for the first time, our trained pharmacist will conduct a full private consultation including:

  • Medical history and eligibility check

  • Blood pressure and BMI measurement

  • Information on how the pill works, the difference between the combined pill and the mini pill (POP), and potential side effects

  • Initial supply (usually 3 months) to allow you to try the method safely

  • Advice on what to do if you miss a pill, experience side effects, or want to switch methods in future

We’ll help you make an informed decision and offer full aftercare guidance.

2. Repeat Supply (Continuation)

If you’re already taking the pill but struggling to get a GP review or prescription renewal, we can help. This includes:

  • Routine clinical checks – BP, BMI, any change in medical history

  • A safe and confidential review of any side effects

  • Up to 12 months’ supply of your current contraceptive pill (if clinically appropriate)

  • Updated information on long-term use, changes in guidance, and what to monitor

We can help even if your original prescription came from your GP, sexual health clinic, or online provider.

Why Use the Pharmacy Contraception Service?

No Need to Wait Weeks for a GP Appointment

Demand for GP services has never been higher—and contraception reviews are often considered routine, meaning you may be waiting weeks for a short appointment or being asked to use online systems that aren’t always easy to navigate.

We offer a walk-in or same-day appointment model where possible, with fast, direct access to a trained pharmacist who can prescribe safely and appropriately.

Free & Confidential

This is a fully NHS-funded service—there is no cost to you. All consultations take place in a private consultation room and are handled with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality.

Safe, Accessible, and Convenient

Whether it’s your first time using the pill or your annual review, you’ll get clinical advice, peace of mind, and the flexibility to manage your contraception on your terms.

Eligibility Criteria

You can access the NHS Contraception Service at Murrays Chemist if:

  • You are aged 16 or over

  • You are starting oral contraception for the first time

  • You are already taking the pill and need a repeat supply

  • You are medically suitable for the combined oral contraceptive pill (COC) or progestogen-only pill (POP)

We can also advise if you’re not sure which pill is right for you.

What the Service Does Not Cover

  • Patients under 16 years – Please contact your GP or local sexual health clinic

  • Emergency contraception – Available as a separate service

  • Long-acting methods (e.g. injection, implant, coil) – We can refer you if needed

  • Patch, ring, or other forms of hormonal contraception – These are not included in the NHS pharmacy service at this time
